Actor, director y productor británico. Comenzó su carrera profesional en 1926 e ingresó a la compañía
Old Vic en 1937, donde protagonizó numerosos roles shakesperianos. Posteriormente, junto con Ralph Richardson, dirigió la compañía (1944–50) y actuó en algunas de sus producciones más destacadas, como

Edipo Rey. Fue ordenado caballero en 1947, y en 1950 comenzó a dirigir y a actuar en notables obras y películas producidas por él mismo; entre sus producciones teatrales más aclamadas se cuentan
Antonio y Cleopatra y
El animador (1957). Fue el primer director artístico del National Theatre (
1962–73), una de cuyas salas actualmente lleva su nombre. En 1970 fue el primer actor en ser ordenado barón y miembro vitalicio de la Cámara de los Lores. Entre sus numerosas películas se cuentan
